You Never Learned to Fly

Eurasian Tree Sparrow

You fell into our kitchen
From the roof of our house that day
The door was left open
So inside you found your way
You flapped those helpless wings
I turned to follow the sound
And looked behind our cluttered things
And there you were I found
Clearly you were frightened
So from me you hopped away
Just thought to your wound I’d tend
But saw no injury anyway
Again you flapped those little wings
That made me realize why
Here you hide behind our things
‘Cause you hadn’t learned to fly
I heard your parents crying
Didn’t seem to know you’re here
So I called out to them saying
“Your baby bird is here”
They didn’t seem to hear
Or they just couldn’t comprehend
But worry not, shed not a tear
We’ll find a way, it’s not the end
And then it started to smell
I remembered I was cooking
It’s tasty I could tell
The cheese had started melting
But it’s not only me attracted
There came our domestic predator
Got some tuna to have her distracted
Still she wanted even more
I had to go back to cooking
Keep silent, just stay still
The cat had finished eating
But wasn’t satisfied with the meal
And again you flapped your wings
Of course they’d made a sound
And down you went gliding
It’s too late when I turned around
The cat was indeed faster
She caught you at one leap
I grabbed a mop to scare her
“Let her go!” I began to plead
I tipped your body with the mop
She shrieked as she was hit
And then you were dropped
But she reclaimed you in a bit
She wouldn’t listen to my pleading
And hurried out taking you away
I followed but she began eating
Devouring your life in a cruel way
I could hear your parents chirping
Shrill sounds of your parents’ cry
They witnessed as you were dying
Their child that’s eager to fly
You were enthusiastic indeed
Were not afraid to try
But never successfully did
You died not learning to fly
